Personality:

Nie Huaisang is one of the more complex characters in the series because what you see is almost never the truth. Not that he's hiding behind a mask for no reasons but from a young age, there's a definite appearance of being useless that transforms into his entire persona after his brother dies. It's a defensive facade, one he learns to wield as a weapon after
losing his only true protector.

While we do see him develop friendships with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng at Gusu, the relationship that defines his life is the one he has with his brother. Nie Mingjue does shelter and protect him but the two brothers also clash regularly over Huaisang's lack of interest in their sect's combat practices involving the use of his saber. This isn't just a matter of being lazy though, given the Nie sect has a history of losing sect leaders to a form of madness due to their sabers. And even after death, their sabers require the dead to keep them from becoming a problem. Huaisang, having watched his own father die of rage fueled by his saber, has an understandable fear of the weapon on top of his own lack of talent with saber cultivation.

Huaisang is a good example of filial loyalty in this canon. While he and his brother do have something of a strained relationship as events progress and Mingjue deteriorates, he's also one of the few people who has no outward fear of his brother, at least not as a rule. He is shown to lose his nerve sometimes, but he also talks back to him on more than one
occasion and even yells at him over being forced into saber practice. Huaisang is more than willing to devote energy into things he enjoys, is good at but the saber is never going to be one of those things.

He does seem to be on friendly terms with most of the young male gentry in their social circle. That said, Huaisang and Wei Wuxian develop something of a partners in crime relationship while at Cloud Recesses while Jiang Wanyin attempts to be the voice of reason, and fails usually. Huaisang and Wei Wuxian do seem to egg each other on, getting caught more than once breaking the strict rules governing the Lan sect and their guests and are given appropriate punishments for the drinking and cheating on a test to name two examples.

When they're at Nightless City for the indoctrination, he does tend to use Wei Wuxian as a physical shield, but also seems to have a rather extensive knowledge of the players involved, mamely Wen Chao and his mistress Wang Lingjiao. Huaisang isn't nearly as assertive here, but he does show the ability to assess situations and realize the ramifications more quickly than anyone else, even under stress. This is made evident in the Xuanwu cave scene where, even though he's hiding, he seems to be more calm than most everyone else when the monster makes itself known. He does manage to make it back to Qinghe, although it's more than likely he had someone protecting him.

Huaisang is one of the more sheltered characters, at least up until the time his brother does die. He spent the war in Gusu, under the protection of the Lan sect. He's very much the spoiled young lord, but not in the same way as Wen Chao, given that he does seem to care about other people. However, that doesn't take away from the fact he can be practical when the situation calls for it. While he's younger, he's definitely softer around the edges, more trusting and kind but not without some level of self-interest.

After his brother dies and he becomes aware of the betrayal involved, Huaisang's demeanor of uselessness becomes his only protection against the man who took his brother from him, took his life from him and left him in a position he never wanted in the first place. He develops the persona of being useless, of needing someone else, (usually Jin Guangyao or Lan Xichen) to solve his problems and he plays the role masterfully to the point that Jin Guangyao is shocked to find out who's been pulling the strings behind the events leading to his downfall. He's calculating and intelligent, capable and skilled diplomatically to a degree that nobody expected. And he's slated to be the next leader of their entire society, a role he never wanted, but chooses to fill because of the corruption of previous holders.

Nie Huaisang is multifaceted and while I'm playing him from an earlier canonpoint, there are clear indicators of the man he becomes after his world is turned upside down. He is stubborn, immature, intelligent, self-serving to a degree, loyal to his sect but he doesn't accept things blindly either. He's educated and strong-willed, pragnatic and quick-thinking, but he's also careful.

Usually.

He's not assertive or brash, his moves tending to be more subtle, even at his own age. He's something of a dandy, preferring nice clothes and jewelry to sports and war. His desire for a comfortable life actually sets him apart from the other young cultivators, given they're all more martially inclined. In Ryslig, I want to explore his growth in a less traumatic fashion than canon provides which is why I've chosen the canon point I have.
